We recently caught up with one of our adult students to find out why she wanted to learn mandarin, how she describes learning with Pistachio Mandarin Language Centre, and what she enjoyed the most.

How did you first hear about Pistachio Mandarin Language Centre?

Like most people do these days, I did a Google search and found on Google maps that the Pistachio Mandarin Chinese classes were close by which was ideal.  From there I went on the website and everything that they offered sounded really good to me.

What was the main reason you wanted to learn Mandarin?

I’m Australian and my husband is Chinese and he’s been here since he was 18 years old but his parents shifted over from China over 5 years ago now.

I wanted to learn Mandarin to bridge the gap so I could communicate with them all in Chinese and of course, I have a genuine interest in the culture.

It’s a language that is so widely spoken and one other benefit is learning another language is good for the brain.

I really like the lessons at Pistachio Mandarin Language Centre because I can apply what I learn and use it day to day.

How would you describe your classes and the tutors?

Due to lockdown in Auckland, we attend classes via Zoom which I have found to be really effective.

Because we have classes every Saturday you’re really motivated to complete your exercises all ready for the lessons.

It’s far more enjoyable to attend with other students because it makes the lessons really interactive and we have regular conversational pieces to practice and learn. We’ve all got to know each other personally too which is really nice.

What are some of your favourite activities in the lessons?

I really enjoy learning how to speak the language to use in a natural way such as discussing the weather, asking each other how we are, how we’re doing, how we greet each other and through repetition it feels far more natural.

I tried to learn on my own for a few years via an app but I always felt nervous when it came time to speak, whereas in these classes you get over your nerves and feel far more confident because of the day to day conversational setting and routine in the class.

You also learn the correct pronunciation and right tone which is huge when learning a new language so I’m pleased to say my confidence has grown as my use of the Chinese language grows too.

Would you recommend Pistachio Mandarin Language Centre? Why?

Yes definitely because  I like the everyday conversational learning approach which I think most people would want and enjoy like I do.
